BMO Capital initiated the North American Pipeline sector with a Market Perform rating. El Paso Corp (NYSE:EP), Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) and Spectra Energy (NYSE:SE) were initiated with Outperform ratings and CenterPoint Energy (NYSE:CNP) and AGL Resources (NYSE:ATG) ATG were assumed with Market Perform ratings.

Friedman Billings believes Aeropostale (NYSE:ARO) has an impressive back-to-school floorset and that momentum should carry into the fall. Additionally, the firm, which initiated shares with an Outperform rating and $38 target, expects the company to buyback shares.

Thomas Weisel believes ImClone (NASDAQ:IMCL) is attractively valued as Erbitux is positioned to capitalize on a number of label-expanding opportunities and that concerns of KRAS-related revenue loss in colorectal cancer and the clinical utility of FLEX lung cancer data are overstated. Shares were assumed with an Overweight rating and $50 target.

OTHER INITIATIONS:

JMP Securities initiated Website Pros. inc. (NASDAQ:WWWW) and GSI Commerce (NASDAQ:GSIC) with Outperform ratings and target of $12 and $19, respectively.

McAfee (NYSE:MFE) was assumed at Baird with an Outperform rating and $44 target.

On Friday, too, stocks were mostly higher with the exception of the Dow industrial, which dropped nearly 8 points, or 0.06%. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite finished 2 points, or 0.15%, and 14 points, or 0.57%, higher respectively.

This morning, two indicators are due for release, but investors will keep their eye mostly on one.
April construction spending will be reported at 10:00 a.m. EDT, and will likely show further decline in spending.
At the same time, the Institute for Supply Management will issue its monthly report for May. Wall Street gives much weight to the results of this indicator, which shows manufacturing activity and is thus a better gauge for economic activity than many other indicators. Already the index is below 50, and this month is expected to decline slightly more.

Making the headline news this morning is British biggest lender to landlords, Bradford & Bingley Plc, which suffered its biggest drop in London trading after the company announced plans to sell shares at a 33% discount and said the housing market is worsening. The company had a pretax loss of 8 million pounds.

Meanwhile, oil dropped below $127 a barrel Monday on worries that soaring prices have eaten away at demand in the U.S. and other nations, and a U.S. probe into futures trading continued to weigh on the market.

In deal news, Mobile service provider China Unicom Ltd. is acquiring fixed-line China Netcom Group Corp. in a share swap valued at $56.3 billion, based on Unicom's stock last traded price.

In other corporate news, ImClone (NASDAQ: IMCL) shares are down 2.5% in premarket trading, while Genentech (NYSE: DNA)'s are up 2.3%. Erbitux, ImClone's drug, was found to extend life by five weeks for lung cancer patients in a study that may help its partners win regulatory approval for the new use. The results could make Erbitux the preferred therapy for half of non-small-cell lung cancer patients who can't take Genentech's Avastin because of side effects. Meanwhile, second phase 3 study of Avastin plus chemotherapy showed improved progression-free survival in women with advanced HER2-negative breast cancer

Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM) may cut its U.S. sales forecast due to disappointing truck sales, the Financial Times reported.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Option Update: ImClone June calls active into ASCO

Filed under: Options, ImClone Systems (IMCL)

ImClone (NASDAQ: IMCL), an oncology care company, is recently trading at $43.36. While the rate of cancer incidence has stabilized to declined since the early 1990s and, with newer and better treatments as well as early detection, cancer death rates have also declined, the war on cancer is still far from won.

It is no surprise, then, that a few days ago, IMS Health (NYSE: RX) -- a provider of market intelligence to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries -- said that cancer drugs sales will nearly double by the year 2012. Assuming a compound growth rate of 12-15% a year, sales will grow from $48 billion in 2008 to $80 billion by 2012.

The main contributors to growth, according to the study, are an increasing number of patients on chemotherapy, not just in major markets but in emerging markets, too, as well as longer treatment periods for growing numbers of patients. Also fueling growth are the increased use of targeted therapeutic agents, along with first-time innovations coming to the market. Expensive new biotechnology drugs, and the increasing use of combination therapies that contribute to the exploding cost of treatment will also fuel cancer drugs sales growth.

The overall pharmaceutical market grew at a 6.4% pace in 2007, meaning that with its double-digit growth rate, the cancer drug market -- today contributing 17% to global pharmaceutical sales -- will only represent a greater proportion and emphasis. Of course, there will be factors moderating growth, such as drugs losing exclusivity and financial constraints of payers.

Cancer-fighting drugs can reach the market twice as fast as the average medicine, and companies can charge as much as $50,000 for a single course of treatment. It is no surprise then that with more and more drugs coming off patent many pharma companies are turning their attention to cancer. But can it save them?

Only recently, Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) has put several key people to head the different segments of its oncology arm, saying the company will focus on increasing the current 5% contribution of oncology drugs to its annual sales. Pfizer has boosted antitumor research 60% since 2005, and has something to show for it with the industry's biggest batch of experimental cancer drugs:18 potential medicines targeted against pancreatic, breast and lung cancers, although it has no oncology drugs awaiting approval now.

Pfizer isn't alone, of course. AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN), GlaxoSmithkline (NYSE: GSK) and Novartis (NYSE: NVS) are testing more than a dozen antitumor drugs each and they're not alone.

Still, most cancer drugs in research today are not expected to be blockbusters. While some could bring sales in the billions, most will have sales of a few hundred million at best. This is very different from the many billions in revenue pharmas are used to with blockbusters like Pfizer's Lipitor, a cholesterol medicine that produced sales of $12.7 billion in 2007. Many of these blockbusters, though, are slowly coming off patent, so capturing the oncology drug market that can bring in the billions could be crucial for big pharmas. It is no surprise, then, that many analysts waited last Thursday for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) abstract report, which includes 5,000 research studies, to try and identify the next potential successes.

The ASCO conference itself will be at the end of the month, May 30-June 2 in Chicago. Many of the studies submitted in the abstract will have updated results then. For now, though, some say that the early winners are Genentech Inc. (NYSE: DNA), Celgene Corp. (NASDAQ: CELG) and Medarex Inc. (NASDAQ: MEDX). (Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ONXX) and OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: OSIP) look the opposite.)

But Genentech and Celgene already spend a lot on cancer research, and already have blockbuster oncology drugs like Avastin, a treatment for colorectal and non-small cell lung cancers and Herceptin for breast cancer (both Genentech's). The question is where were the big pharmas in all this?

Well, they tried:

Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY) is awaiting approval for Enzastaurin, its non-hodgkin's lymphoma drug late 2010 / early 2011 and for Arzoxifene for osteoporosis and prevention of breast cancer, and also has quite a list of oncology drugs clinical trials going on. The company says a new study showed Alimta delayed growth in lung cancer when used soon after initial chemotherapy. This could support broader use of Alimta, which had $854 million in sales last year.

Pfizer said that study results across several difficult-to-treat cancers will be presented at ASCO. Most notable, though, is Pfizer's tests for Sutent for use in breast cancer, perhaps competing with Avastin there.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC (NYSE: GSK) announced that its Tykerb drug combined with Genentech's Herceptin increased progression-free survival in women with HER2-positive, advanced breast cancer to 12 weeks versus 8.1 weeks for Tykerb alone.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY), which co-markets ImClone Systems' (NASDAQ: IMCL) colon cancer drug Erbitux -- another example of a best-seller cancer drug from a smaller company -- was mentioned by 100 study abstracts. As for Erbitux, though, its sales could be hurt from studies that showed the drug is useless in nearly half of colon cancer patients and that now a simple gene test could determine compatibility ahead of time. Amgen's Vectibix will likely be affected by these findings as well.

Speaking of Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN), it also provided an abstract to a study that showed that according to early test results, its experimental drug Denosumab was more effective than Novartis's Zometa in halting cancer's spread to bones and preventing fractures in cancer patients.

Notably missing were Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK) and Wyeth Inc. (NYSE: WYE), although it's possible they were hidden somewhere inside the 5,000 abstracts.

Regardless, even the above examples were not the most exciting studies found.

Luckily for cancer patients, drug companies have something to strive for as more of their other blockbuster drugs go off patent and sales decline. With more research & development going into oncology drugs, this could be a win-win situation all around. The question is whether big pharmas are doing enough to move in that direction. It seems that some are and others are not, with Glaxo, AstraZeneca, Novartis and Pfizer, along with smaller Amgen and Lilly, actually poised better than Wyeth and Merck to improve in that market. DNA and CELG have long been oncology favorites, with good reason.

Now if only now a company could find the ultimate cure or vaccine, that'd be great for patients, sales and shareholders!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Closing Bell: Merger talk, oil drop, dollar gain

Filed under: After the bell, Earnings reports, Deals, XM Satellite Radio (XMSR), Clear Channel Commun (CCU), Research in Motion (RIMM), ImClone Systems (IMCL)
Crude surpassed $126.00 before retreating down by $1.85 to $124.11 late in the day. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on IMCL.

After hitting a one-year low of $30.34 in August, the stock hit a one-year high of $49.18 in April. This morning, IMCL opened at $42.66. So far today the stock has hit a low of $41.94 and a high of $43.49. As of 12:40, IMCL is trading at $42.02, down $2.81 (-6.3%). The chart for IMCL looks bullish but deteriorating, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a June bear-call credit spread above the $50 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make an 8.7% return in six weeks as long as IMCL is below $50 at June expiration. Hershey would have to rise by more than 18% before we would start to lose money.

IMCL hasn't been above $50 at all in the past year and has shown resistance around $47.50 recently. This trade could be risky if the company continues its upward climb, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance IMCL might find around $49, where the stock topped over the past month.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. Citi posted a $52 price target for IMCL and expects to hear good news at an upcoming conference. If you think that the company won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on IMCL.

After hitting a one-year high of $47.94 in October, the stock hit a one-year low of $30.00 last March. IMCL opened this morning at $44.81. So far today the stock has hit a low of $43.61 and a high of $45.20. As of 11:33, IMCL is trading at $43.80, up $0.71 (1.7%). The chart for IMCL looks bullish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 Stars (out of 5) Hold rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a May bull-put credit spread below the $35 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 9.9% return in just two months as long as IMCL is above $35 at May expiration. ImClone would have to fall by more than 20% before we would start to lose money.

IMCL hasn't been below $35 since August and has shown support around $42 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings (due out in late April) disappoint, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the support the stock has found just below $40, where it has bounced twice so far in 2008.

Now there is activity in Hilton Hotels (NYSE: HLT) worth taking a look at.

Hilton Hotels closed up 9.34 to $45.39 today on news the company agreed to be acquired by Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) in a deal valued at $26 billion. A reader pointed out interesting activity on Hilton Hotels.

With the stock up, let's look and see how many "lucky" traders picked up calls on the stocks. A call option gives the buyer the right to buy the stock at a set price. If you think a stock is going to go up you can buy the right to buy that stock at a set price, in the hopes that it does in fact go up, as you expect.

The Hilton July 35 calls (HLTGG) had a volume of 3,660 Tuesday with a high price of $1.90. That is above the average volume of 314 calls per day since the options were issued and just above the previous record high daily volume of 3,616 on 5/31. Those calls are now worth about $10.50 a piece so a 450% gain over two days isn't bad. I have to say this looks suspicious; sort of like a man running from a bank with a bag of money.

Looking at the Hilton August 40 calls (HLTHH) it becomes a little more obvious. Tuesday there were 5,844 contracts for 0.85 cents or less. In the past three weeks -- since the options came out there were only a total of 70 contracts traded. The contracts bought Tuesday are now worth about $5.80 a piece. A 582% gain in two days, representing about $2.8 million in profits.

If that isn't enough money ...there is more. The July 40 calls (HLTGH) saw 3,312 contracts trade Tuesday for less than 0.40. Now at 5.50 it is a 1,275% return for another $1.6 million in profits.

While I do not know who made the trades, their intentions and what they knew when; I am betting they will soon be getting a call from the SEC. In all fairness, just because I see a man wearing a black ski mask running out of the bank carrying a bag of money and a gun doesn't mean he is a bank robber. These trades could be legit, but they trades have all the tell-tale signs of insider trading. By the way has anyone been following Paris recently? Now, he has issued a trading alert, once again recommending the shares.

Two events, he says, are the basis of his new buy. The editor of The Medical Technology Stock Letter says, "The first event was Amgen's failed clinical trial of their competing product, Vectibix, when used in combination with Avastin and FOLFOX for the treatment of front-line metastatic colorectal cancer."

This, he notes, has "significantly strengthened" the competitive position of Imclone's Erbitux versus Vectibix. The second event, he adds, was the recent failure of Erbitux in the pancreatic cancer setting, which caused the stock to sell off.

McCamant explains, "This is a low impact event for Erbitux, and, in fact, they have other trials running in pancreatic that may still pan out."

The news, he states, while is disappointing, is "hardly a significant setback" for the company. To the contrary, he says, "We believe that with multiple potential positive catalysts on the nearer-term horizon, the pullback in the stock that this news led to has created a golden trading opportunity."

The advisor notes that results from two Phase 3 trials in metastatic colorectal cancer were just presented at the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR).

He observes, "A survival benefit of 32% was witnessed, with Erbitux patients living 6.1 months, versus 4.6 months for patients treated with best supportive care. These results are highly statistically significant."

He also notes that further out on the horizon, he expects additional data from the Phase 3 trial of Erbitux in the lung cancer setting. This is anticipated to be a second half event.

In the meantime, he sees recent price weakness as a chance to initiate trading position. He suggests buying on dips below $41 with a three-month trading target of $49.
